Volunteer Donors
Central
California Blood Center relies solely on volunteer donors
to supply blood and blood components. Community volunteers
have proven over time to be the safest source of blood
for transfusion.
Who
Can Donate?
Anyone who is in good health, is at least 17 years
old and weighs a minimum of a 110 pounds may donate
blood every 56 days (8 weeks).
Health
and Social History Questionnaire
Prospective donors first complete a detailed questionnaire
to help identify persons at high risk of carrying blood-borne
diseases. The assurance of confidentiality and absence
of incentives for pressure to donate encourage prospective
donors to be forthright and truthful about their health
and lifestyle.
Medical
History Assessment
The next step toward becoming a volunteer blood
donor includes a screening interview and a brief physical
examination of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and
a test for blood iron. If donors meet the prescribed
medical requirements, specially trained technicians
collect one unit (pint) of blood.
Collection
Process
If the prescribed medical requirements are met,
a unit of blood (a little less than a pint) is collected
from the donor.
After
the Collection
Afterwards, donors are served refreshments in the
Canteen while remaining seated for fifteen minutes.
